Gaming laptops like Legion are great performance beasts, but their awful battery life and the heavy charger make it really inconvenient to take them to classes.
Here’s my simple solution (without a Mac…): Leave your laptop in the dorm and use Moonlight & Sunshine to remote control it.
Quick Setup
- On your laptop: Download Sunshine on your laptop. The setup is really simple. You just need to set a password and don’t have to change any settings.
- On your tablet: Download Moonlight on your pad from Google Play / AppStore. Make sure you turn off the power-saving mode or refresh rate limit to have better performance.
- Connect:
- If you only want to use it to connect to your laptop when you are in campus and using the campus WiFi, you can directly add the IP address of your laptop in Moonlight. And you’re all set! Don’t need to worry about taking the heavy metal brick anymore!
- If you’re also going to use it without campus WiFi, you need to use Tailscale to intranet penetration, which I will skip here.
Performance
Based on my own experience, you can enjoy stable >90 FPS connection and low enough latency (for work, perhaps not for FPS games XD) as long as the WiFi is solid.
